Tears of the Kingdom players will be gathering well over 100 materials in their playthrough. Materials can be used for cooking, fusion, and more. One example of a material is Monster Extract, which can create unique meals when tossed in with other ingredients.

Although Monster Extract can only be bought for a relatively cheap price, it isn't something that Link will find in general stores or dropped from monsters. There's only one shop in Tears of the Kingdom that sells it, and it's also given as a reward for a side quest. Fortunately, both the side quest and the store that gives away Monster Extract are located in the same region: East Akkala.

Where to Find Monster Extract

Players can get Monster Extract in Tarrey Town (4008, 1617, 0127). They can receive it as a reward for helping Kilton, or they can buy it from Fyson for 50 Rupees. If players find they're low on Rupees, they can sell gems or meals until they have the required amount.

Fyson's store, Sippery Falcon, is right near the entrance to Tarrey Town (on the right). He sells x3 bottles of Monster Extract for 50 Rupees. He's also the only store that sells it. If players have already completed "A Monstrous Collection," then this is the only way to get Monster Extract in TotK.

A Monstrous Collection Side Quest (Kilton)

Kilton will give Link a bottle of Monster Extract each time he turns in a photo of a requested monster in the side quest "A Monstrous Collection." Just like Fyson, Kilton can be found in Tarrey Town after players meet him near Woodland Stable. As such, there are three things to complete before this side quest can start:

  1. If players don't have the camera, they'll need to go to Lookout Landing and speak to Josha and Robbie. This will start a side quest called "Camera Work in The Depths." Complete this, and Link will get the camera and the Hyrule Compendium.
  2. Go to Pico Pond (1208, 1214, 0020), which is northeast of Woodland Stable. Near the cave at Pico Pond are Kilton and Koltin. Speaking to them unlocks the side quest "The Hunt for Bubbul Gems." Simply go inside the Pico Pond Cave and find the Bubbulfrog. Give its gem to Koltin, and Kilton will notify Link that he's relocating to Tarrey Town.
  3. In Tarrey Town, players will need to complete the side adventure "Mattison's Independence." There are several steps in completing the side adventure, but once it's finished and Mattison leaves for Gerudo Town, players can finally start "A Monstrous Collection."

Kilton will want to see five different monsters to make monster statues. All Link needs to do is take a picture of whichever monster he wants to display, and show it to Kilton. Each time one of the "A Monstrous Collection" parts are completed, Kilton will give Link a bottle of Monster Extract. Since there are five parts in "A Monstrous Collection," players can get up to x5 Monster Extracts from this side adventure.

Monster Extract can be used to cook the following meals:

Players will need to cook Monster Curry for part 2 of the side quest "Teach Me A Lesson" at the Hateno School (3367, -1991, 0128) in Hateno Village. Completing this side quest is how players can unlock the Hateno Village garden, thus allowing them to plant their own crops.
