One Switch owner has recently taken to social media to demonstrate how diving into an inch-deep puddle in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is not necessarily a fatal experience. That is, at least, if the player gets lucky enough.
While Sky Islands ended up being a much smaller part of the new Zelda game than some fans might have hoped for, Tears of the Kingdom is still much more focused on skydiving than climbing. In fact, one of the very first mechanics that the game teaches to the player is that Link can survive a fall from any height, so long as he lands in a body of water that's deep enough for swimming.
Keeping that in mind, Reddit user miaio recently tried diving into a pond, only to realize that they were actually falling into a puddle at the very last moment. However, Link ended up surviving the plunge thanks to an unsuspecting deer that he accidentally landed on. The surprisingly happy outcome of this stunt comes down to the way taming deer works in Tears of the Kingdom. Namely, landing on a deer will automatically initiate the game's mounting animation, irrespective of the actual falling distance. This also goes for horses and other mountable animals in the game, with the interaction itself dating back to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
And while this exceedingly lucky player realized the potential of using mountable mammals as landing softeners all on their own, the technique itself has already seen some use among the fandom. Not long after the game hit the market in mid-May, one Tears of the Kingdom player devised a trick for avoiding fall damage before getting the glider that uses the same underlying method, just with a horse.
The potential for landing face-first into a puddle shouldn't stop players from skydiving in Tears of the Kingdom. Not only are deceptively shallow bodies of water an infrequent occurrence, but even crashing into one isn't necessarily a fatal experience if the player has at least one Fairy in their inventory, as each one of those creatures will automatically be used for reviving Link as soon as he suffers lethal damage.
Players who enjoy skydiving would do well to get their hands on the Tears of the Kingdom Glide Armor set as soon as possible. While this costume doesn't slow down falling speed, each one of its pieces will provide a significant boost to Link's airborne maneuverability, making free-falling an extremely responsive experience.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available on Nintendo Switch.
