Like its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom brings back a classic Zelda monster and turns them into a difficult miniboss for its players. Gleeoks are three-headed dragons, and they serve as the main target for the "Unknown Three-Headed Monster" side quest.
In Tears of the Kingdom, there are four types of Gleeoks: Flame, Ice, Thunder, and King Gleeok. For "Unknown Three-Headed Monster," Link will need to defeat a Flame-Gleeok. However, players may not want to attempt this side quest until they've grown stronger and have better weapons/armor.
How to Unlock "Unknown Three-Headed Monster"
"Unknown Three-Headed Monster" is one of the three tasks in the second half of the Monster-Control Crew quest-line. Speak to Gralens in the Emergency Shelter at Lookout Landing. If this is the first time speaking to him, players will be assigned the following:
- WANTED: Molduga
- WANTED: Stone Talus
- WANTED: Hinox
These three quests must be completed before players can grab the "Unknown Three-Headed Monster" side quest. Fortunately, once Link accepts the quests from Gralens, the location of each WANTED monster will be marked on the map.
"Unknown Three-Headed Monster" Walkthrough
Once Link has turned in all the "WANTED" side quests, he can speak to Gralens again for info on new monster sightings. This time, players will want to inquire about the "three-headed monster." This will add the "Unknown Three-Headed Monster" to the Adventure Log and place a destination marker on the map.
There are reports that a three-headed monster that breathes fire is attacking people at the Bridge of Hylia near Faron. Before rushing off to confront this beast, players would do well to bring the following:
- A strong bow
- Arrows
- Keese Eyeballs (or Aerocuda Eyeballs). Ice Keese Eyeballs will deal double damage for this miniboss.
- (Optional) Vow of Mineru/Mineru's Construct
"Unknown Three-Headed Monster" Location
The Bridge of Hylia is a little southeast of the Great Plateau. Players can either walk there from a nearby shrine, or they can dive from the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower (0602, -2118, 0098). While not necessary, players may want the Glide Set/Wingsuit to make diving through the air easier.
Being too close to the Flame-Gleeok may cause damage to Link. If players prefer to fight up-close, then they should equip flame-resistant gear (ex: Desert Voe Armor). However, the best way to defeat Gleeoks is to keep stunning them. This can be done by using a bow and aiming for their heads.
Tips for Defeating Flame Gleeok
Players can get a "headstart" against Gleeoks if they attack from above. For the Great Bridge of Hylia, glide on over from the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower. Then, dive with R-button to get closer to the Gleeok, and then press ZR-button to draw the bow. This will slow down time and make it easier for Link to aim arrows at each of the Gleeok heads. When the Gleeok is stunned, aim for their heads with a melee weapon.
Phase 1-2
- If players have Mineru's Construct, they can climb onto its back (A-button) and spring off (B-button, then A-button). Right as Link jumps off, quickly press ZR-button to enter bullet time. Shoot arrows at the heads before Link touches the ground.
-
Another strategy players will want to do is fuse
Keese Eyeballs
to arrows. Keese Eyeballs and Aerocuda Eyeballs work as homing missiles, so they'll always land a critical hit as long as the Gleeok isn't out of range. Combine this with springboarding off of Mineru's Construct to stun it quickly.
If the Flame Gleeok sweeps Link off the edge, climb up one of the pillars holding the bridge. One of them is broken and gives Link a place to stand where he can then use the Ascend Ability.
Phase 3
When the Gleeok flies out of Link's reach, fire Keese Eyeball-arrows before it gets too high. Once it starts charging its attack, move out of the way of the meteor. It will c reate an updraft once it hits the ground, and opening the paraglider above this updraft is enough to bring Link close enough to pierce the heads with arrows.
Once all heads are stunned, the Gleeok will fall and crash into the ground. Gleeoks take fall-damage just like Link, so when they drop from this height, they'll be defeated.
"Unknown Three-Headed Monster" Reward
Return to the Emergency Shelter and report the good news to Gralens. He'll give Link 100 Rupees as a reward. If Link has already beaten the "Unknown Sky Giant" and "Unknown Huge Silhouette," Gralens will give him a
Diamond in addition to the Rupees.
