Voltfin Trout in Tears of the Kingdom have shock-resistant effects when cooked, but they're also used in certain armor upgrades. Unfortunately, they're not as common as the Hyrule Bass or Ancient Arowana. Those that want to farm them for armor upgrades should look to the Hebra region.
Because of their rarity in Tears of the Kingdom, it may be best to farm well over 10 Voltfin Trout before using them in cooking or upgrades. Most of the armor that wasn't in Breath of the Wild require premium materials for enhancement. With the item-duplication glitch being patched out of 1.1.2, the grind for farming Voltfin Trout will take quite some time for TotK players.
Voltin Trout Location (TotK)
The Voltfin Trout can be found in the Hebra Plunge and the Tama Pond. Those that go searching for them in the Hebra Plunge should have at least level 1 cold-resistant armor (ex: Snowquill Set from Rito Village), or level 2 for the colder parts of Hebra. If players don't have the rupees for armor, then they can make Chilly Elixirs using Monster Parts and a Cold Darner or Winterwing Butterfly. The more Darners/Butterflies added, the stronger the effects of the elixir.
While it isn't necessary, it's easier to find the Hebra Plunge and the Tama Pond if players activate the Rospro Pass Skyview Tower first. This will make both Voltfin Trout locations visible on the map.
It's highly advised to take a picture of a Voltfin Trout to register it to the Hyrule Compendium. From there, the Voltfin Trout can be tracked via the Sensor. Players can get this from Robbie after obtaining the Auto Build Ability from the Abandoned Central Mine. Getting Auto Build will unlock a series of side quests to help Robbie unlock the complete effects of the Purah Pad.
Once Voltin Trout are in the Compendium, players can track it by doing the following:
- Open the map with (-).
- Tap Y-button to change the Sensor's Target.
- Look under Creatures in the Hyrule Compendium for the Voltfin Trout (only works if it has a picture).
Tama Pond Location
The exact coordinates for Tama Pond are -2997, 1895, 0307. Players can reach this by launching from the Rospro Pass Skyview Tower, traveling from the Oromuwak Shrine (-3079, 1618, 0243), or traveling from Rito Village. Another way is to dive from one of the Sky Islands above the Tama Pond (ex: The Wind Temple).
Since there aren't any remote bombs in Tears of the Kingdom, players will need to swim after the Voltfin Trout or shoot them with arrows. Trying to hit them with a bomb flower will turn them into Roasted Trout, which defeats the purpose of farming the Voltfin Trout in the first place. Once a trout has been turned into Roasted or Frozen Trout, it loses its effects; it can't be used to upgrade armor in this form.
Equip the Zora Armor or Vah Ruta Divine Helm to swim faster.
Hebra Plunge Location
The Hebra Plunge is right next to Tama Pond. Thus, players can leave from the same areas to reach the plunge as they could to find Tama Pond (ie: Oromuwak Shrine, Rito Village). The coordinates for the Hebra Plunge are -3086, 2119, 0121.
Be sure to have cold-resistance when searching the Hebra Plunge.
The Voltin Trout are harder to see in the waters of the Hebra Plunge. Since they're swimming in frigid waters, players will want to avoid hitting them with arrows. If they do, then they'll want to hurry and collect the Voltfin Trout less it turns into Frozen Trout. Like Roasted Trout, Frozen Trout are considered their own "meal" and will give Link heat-resistance when consumed. As Frozen Trout, they can't be cooked.
Players can also find Chillfin Trout in these waters (just as they can at Tama Pond), so make sure Link is farming the right type of trout.
Where to Use Voltfin Trout
Cooking Voltfin Trout into any meal will apply a Shock Resistance effect to the meal. The more trout, the more HP the meal recovers and the longer the buff will last. Shock Resistance is good to have when battling enemies like Electric Keese or Thunder Gleeoks.
Players who manage to get the Charged Armor Set from doing "The Fifth Sage" main quest will need Voltfin Trout for the armor's level 4 enhancement. Each piece will require 10 Voltfin Trout each, totaling to 30 Voltfin Trout just for an entire set of armor. Of course, if players just want the Set Bonus, then all they need to do is get the armor pieces to level 2.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available for Nintendo Switch.
