On his travels in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Link will encounter a significant number of NPCs that need his help. Players that want to take a quick detour to help the citizens of Hyrule will find themselves generously rewarded, and this is especially the case when it comes to the Teach Me A Lesson quests.

In order to unlock a field that Link can use as a sustainable source of vegetables, both quests need to be completed. This guide goes over every step needed to complete both quests in Tears of the Kingdom.

This guide contains spoilers about key NPCs in Kakariko Village and mild spoilers regarding the state of Hateno Village. Spoiler-minded players that have not yet been to Kakariko should proceed with caution.

Where To Find Hateno School in Tears of the Kingdom

In order to trigger the side quest, the player must locate Hateno School. Hateno School is a new location not featured in Breath of the Wild, as it is explained that Zelda funded the school after the events of the first game.

To find Hateno School, players must go to Hateno Village (most accessible by paragliding northeast from the Rabella Wetlands Skyview Tower) and follow the signs to get to the school. The exact coordinates of the school are 3367, -1991, 0128.

Players traveling to Hateno Village for the first time should activate the Zanmik Shrine at coordinates 3469, -2178, 0148 for convenient fast travel. It should also be noted that the school operates reasonable opening hours, so players should stick to entering it from 9 am to 3 pm, when NPCs will be available to talk to.

Teach Me A Lesson 1 Walkthrough

Speak to Symin

Symin, a returning NPC from Breath of the Wild, has been tasked with teaching the children of Hateno Village. Unfortunately, the children will not believe a word he says without proof. In order to teach them a valuable lesson about the Great Calamity, Symin requests that Link travel to Kakariko Village and visit Lady Paya's (formerly Lady Impa's) Hall in order to take a picture of a specific screen depicting the Calamity.

Head to Paya's Hall in Kakariko Village

The player should then head to Paya's Hall in Kakariko Village. The easiest fast travel point is Makasura Shrine at coordinates 1770, -1051, 0166. The exact coordinates for the hall are 1784, -0984, 0123. The screen should be up the stairs and to the player's left as they enter the sleeping quarters.

Take a Picture of the Screen

Once there, players can take a picture of the 'Screen depicting the Calamity' using the camera rune. Ensure that the description label for the screen comes up and that the full screen is in frame.

Players must have unlocked the camera in order to complete this quest. The camera is incredibly useful and easy to unlock, so players that have not unlocked it should do so as soon as possible.

Return to Symin and Collect Reward

The player should return to Hateno School between the hours of 9am-3pm with the photo and speak to Symin in order to complete the quest. Symin will show the photo to the students and teach them a lesson that Link can optionally sit in on (skipping this cutscene does not affect rewards).

The reward for completing Teach Me A Lesson 1 is ten Hylian Rice and the ability to progress onto Teach Me A Lesson 2. Hylian Rice can be used to make dishes like curry, rice balls, risotto, and fried rice. Hold on to at least one Hylian Rice, however, as it will come in handy for completing Teach Me A Lesson 2.

Teach Me A Lesson 2 Walkthrough

Once Teach Me A Lesson 1 has been completed, the player should return to the school in order to complete the second part of the quest and receive a far more useful reward.

Speak to Symin Again

Once again, the children of Hateno Village will not believe Symin's teachings without tangible proof of his words. Symin asks Link if he can bring a Monster Curry for the children to sample.

Where to Find Monster Extract and Goron Spice

The most reliable way to find Monster Extract is to head to Tarrey Town and purchase it from the merchant at coordinates 4002, 1634, 0128 for 50 rupees. Players can easily get to Tarrey Town by paragliding southeast from the Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower. Monster Extract is also an incredibly rare drop from Evermeans, those annoying living tree enemies that plague Hyrule.

Goron Spice can be purchased from Traveling Merchant Yammo around Tabantha Bridge Stable or from the Goron Gusto Shop in Goron City for 16 Rupees. The coordinates for the Goron Gusto Shop are 1673, 2456, 0384.

The children are satisfied with Link's offering. The reward this time is access to Hateno School's field, which Link can use to farm his own crops. After talking to Symin, players should find Uma, another Hateno Village NPC, to find more information about farming crops.
