The One Piece anime is ruined by that exact format. In order to have weekly episodes without overtaking the manga, the pacing gets slowed to a crawl. Scenes that were a single panel in the manga become 2 minutes of nothing happening in the anime. A seasonal release removes the incentive to drag things out like that.

Shanks sacrificing his arm saving Luffy is certainly a significant moment, but there's no way it can be considered the most significant. Also, if Shanks was that desperate to get rid of the abyss mark, he could easily have just pulled out his sword and cut it off himself.
